No. 14 Broncos Take Down Cougar Wrestlers 22-13
Powered by four consecutive wins by their big men, Boise State defeated BYU to earn their first dual meet of the season and drop the Cougars to 1-2 on the season.
The Cougars shot out to an early 7-3 lead in the first three matches, as a Rocky Smart loss to No. 4 Larry Quisel was sandwiched by wins by Rangi Smart and Chris Risenmay. Rangi caught a break when defending national champion Kirk White withdrew from competition because of a shoulder injury sustained at last week's Las Vegas Invitational.
Kyle Klonizos got things going for Boise State with a 9-5 win over Mitch Stevens at 174 pounds. The Cougars lost three more in the heavy weight classes as Adam Bendorf fell to Cash Edwards (15-6), while Brandon Ruiz suffered a 23-7 technical fall to No. 7 Rusty Cook, followed by a Boe Rushton decision over BYU's Chris Miller (3-1).
Trent Rollins and Aaron Holker gave the Cougars some hope with big wins at 125 and 133 pounds, pulling the team to within 18-13 with one match remaining. Josh Spencer, filling in for Jose Enriquez at 141 pounds, came up short against Boise's Gabe Vigil in the final contest of the day.
"Boise is a tough team," said BYU coach Mark Schultz. "The highlight of the meet was definitely Trent Rollins pulling out a win against No. 18 K.C. Rock. That was a big win for him."
The Cougars will now have nearly an entire month to rest for their next competition, Jan. 7-8 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.
