BYU claims 2021-22 WCC Commissioner’s Cup, Women’s All-Sports Award, Mike Gilleran WCC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
SAN MATEO, Calif. – BYU took home three major West Coast Conference awards tonight at the annual WCC Awards Dinner, including the 2021-22 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the WCC’s top-performing institution in conference play for the past year.
This marks the ninth consecutive Commissioner's Cup victory for the Cougars, in their 10th year of conference competition.
The Commissioner's Cup is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup. Stretching back to the 2001-02 school year, the Commissioner's Cup has become an annual tradition celebrating WCC athletic excellence.
This is the ninth year in a row that BYU has won both the Commissioner's Cup and the Women's All-Sports Award. The Cougars captured WCC Championships in men's and women's cross country, and volleyball, while BYU softball and women's soccer garnered shares of the conference crown. The Cougars' women's soccer team went on to the NCAA Women's College Cup title game. Strong finishes in men's and women's golf also propelled BYU to the top of the conference in 2021-22.
The Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the WCC's Executive Council to recognize the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award is named in honor of the conference's first full-time commissioner, Mike Gilleran.
BYU cross country’s Conner Mantz received the Gilleran award this year and is a two-time NCAA individual national champion (2020 and 2021) as well as a three-time All-American (2019-21). He was tabbed the USTFCCCA NCAA Men’s Athlete of the Year last year. He is the first BYU men’s cross country student-athlete to win three individual conference championships and the 11th male student-athlete in NCAA DI cross country history to repeat as individual national champion. Mantz recorded top-10 finishes in each of his 22 collegiate cross country competitions. He garnered 13 wins – including nine straight – to complete his collegiate career. A two-time team captain from 2020-21, Mantz was also named the NCAA Division I Men’s Cross Country National Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2020 and 2021. Since the award started in 1976, Mantz becomes just the second male Cougar to win the award (Miles Batty, 2012).
