PROVO, UTAH – BYU Athletics is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup Final Division I Fall Standings released on Thursday.

The finish is BYU's best ever in fall, winter or spring competition.

The Directors' Cup annually ranks college athletic programs around the country by awarding points based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships. Preliminary standings are released following the fall and winter athletic seasons and lead up to the release of a final ranking following the spring season.

"It was an incredible fall season at BYU," said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. "A huge congratulations to our resilient, tough, committed, passionate, fun-loving student-athletes and coaches for all that they were able to accomplish. To be No. 1 in the nation in the standings at this point in time, is something for all of Cougar Nation to be proud of."

BYU’s No. 1 finish in the fall standings ranks the Cougars above some of the nation’s best collegiate athletic programs, including Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State, to round out the top five.

The Cougars’ fall sports combined to generate 368 points. Women’s cross country and women's soccer each recorded 90 points, the most points of any BYU fall sports, following national runner-up finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and NCAA College Cup. Top-10 national finishes for men's cross country and women's volleyball received 72 and 64 points, respectively, and a Top-20 finish for football received 52 points.

The winter Directors' Cup rankings will be released in April.
