BYU leads race for 2018-19 WCC Commissioners Cup
SAN BRUNO, Calif. — BYU sits atop the 2018-19 West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup overall standings released by the conference following the completion of the league's basketball season.
The Cougars enter the spring season with a double-digit lead in the race for this year's WCC Commissioners Cup. BYU has amassed 57.5 points overall, followed by Saint Mary's (45.0) and Gonzaga (44.5) with San Francisco (39.0) and LMU (36.0) rounding out the top five.
Earning points for the Cougars, BYU's WCC Conference Tournament Champion women's basketball team posted a runner-up finish in the regular season, while men’s basketball shared second place in the standings. This followed a fall campaign that saw the Cougars win outright championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball.
BYU dominates the women's all-sports trophy race, one-point shy of the maximum tally with 39.0 points (out of 40 possible). The Cougars finished no lower than second in any sport and swept cross country, soccer and volleyball hardware during the fall season. Pepperdine University is second in the women's race for the trophy with 25.5 points after a runner-up finish in volleyball and third place finishes in women’s soccer and women’s basketball.
The BYU men are in fourth place with 18.5 points, just three points off the pace currently set by Saint Mary's and San Francisco (21.5). Gonzaga is in third (20.5) while Portland ranks fifth (16.0).
Overall, BYU's compiled Commissioner's Cup points through the winter season includes men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball.
The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the conclusion of men’s and women’s tennis championships, held April 25-27 in Claremont, Calif.
The West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play during the year. BYU captured its unprecedented sixth-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup victory last season and also won the women’s all-sport trophy for the sixth time.
