BYU leads Commissioner's Cup Standings following April Championships

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – With just three championships remaining in the 2017-18 season, five-time defending champion Brigham Young University owns a double-digit lead in the race for the West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during Conference play.

After winning outright championships in men’s cross country, women’s golf and a shared volleyball title to go along with a runner-up showing in women’s cross country, the Cougars have earned 82.5 Cup points. Loyola Marymount University is second with 70.5 points.

BYU owns a narrow lead over the University of San Francisco in the men's all-sports trophy race. The Cougars lead 34-32. The Cougars won the cross country championship, while the Dons won the men’s soccer title.

BYU leads the women's all-sports trophy race with a tally of 48.5 points after collecting championships in volleyball and golf. Pepperdine University is close behind at 47.5 points after collecting titles in soccer, tennis and beach volleyball.

Overall, the Cougars compiled 82.5 Commissioner's Cup points at the conclusion of the April championships, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, women's volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, beach volleyball and men’s and women’s tennis. Loyola Marymount (70.5) is second, San Francisco (68.5) is third while Gonzaga University is fourth with 66.0 points. Pepperdine (65.5) is fifth, two points in front of Saint Mary’s College (63.5) in sixth place. Santa Clara University (62.5), University of San Diego (58.0), University of the Pacific (50.0) and the University of Portland (47.0) round out the standings.

BYU captured its unprecedented fifth consecutive Commissioner’s Cup victory last season and swept both the men’s and women’s all-sport trophies for the fourth time. The Cougars rank No. 45 in the 2017-18 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Division I Spring Standings, released April 26, 2018. 

Three West Coast Conference championships remain up for grabs in May: women’s rowing, softball and baseball.
