BYU wins fourth consecutive WCC Commissioner’s Cup

BERKELEY, California – Brigham Young University won the 2015-16 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the WCC institution enjoying the most success during conference play. This marks the fourth consecutive Commissioner’s Cup victory for the Cougars in their fifth year of membership in the West Coast Conference. 

After posting one of the narrowest margins of victory in 2014-15 (two points), BYU posted the largest in Commissioner’s Cup history in 2015-16 with a 21-point win against runner-up Saint Mary’s College. The previous record was 12.5, set by BYU in 2013-14 in its second straight Cup triumph. The Cougars finished with 109 overall points, while the Gaels recorded 88 points, which represents the largest point total and the best overall finish in school history. 

With its fourth Commissioner’s Cup win, BYU now owns sole possession of second place in overall victories. San Diego is the all-time leader with five (2008-12), while Pepperdine University (2002-04) is third. Santa Clara University (2005 and 2007) and Loyola Marymount University (2006) also own cup triumphs. 

En route to winning the Commissioner's Cup, BYU also swept the Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophies for the third time (2012-14, 2015-16). The Cougars won the Women's All-Sports Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. With 65 points, the Cougars posted a seven-point win against runner-up Santa Clara. With 44 points, BYU also captured the Men's All-Sports Trophy for the third time in the last four seasons, posting a 1.5 point win against 2014-15 winner Saint Mary’s.

The awards were handed out as part of the seventh annual West Coast Conference Honors Dinner, held Tuesday night at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California.

The West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup.

In 2015-16, the Cougars captured outright West Coast Conference championships in men’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s golf, women's soccer, softball and volleyball to go along with shared titles in baseball and women’s cross country. The Gaels won outright championships in men’s golf and shared titles in baseball and men’s basketball.

Overall, BYU finished atop the Commissioner's Cup standings with 109.0 points, besting second place Saint Mary’s (88.0 points) and third place Gonzaga University (87.5 points). San Diego finished fourth (79.5), while Santa Clara (77.5) rounded out the top-five. Loyola Marymount (75.5), Pepperdine (74.0), the University of San Francisco (72.0), the University of Portland (53.5 points) and University of the Pacific (39.0 points) rounded out the 2015-16 standings.
