BYU wins third consecutive WCC Commissioner's Cup

BYU captured the 2014-15 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the WCC institution with the most success during conference play. It marks the third consecutive Commissioner's Cup victory for BYU in its fourth year of membership in the WCC.

The WCC Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup. BYU posted one of the closest margins of victory in Commissioner's Cup history with a two-point win against runner-up and five-time cup winner University of San Diego. The Cougars finished with 89 overall points, while the Toreros recorded 87 points. The narrowest margin of victory since the award was established in 2001-02 is 1.5 points, set three times — 2007, 2009 and 2011.

With its third Commissioner's Cup win, BYU now shares second place with Pepperdine University (2002-04) in overall victories. San Diego is the all-time leader with five (2008-12). Santa Clara University (2005 and 2007) and Loyola Marymount University (2006) also own cup triumphs.

En route to winning the Commissioner's Cup, BYU also won the Women's All-Sports Trophy for the third consecutive year. With 55 points, the Cougars posted a nine-point victory over runner-up San Diego. The Toreros captured the Men's All-Sports Trophy for the first time since 2010 and their third overall. San Diego finished four points ahead of Pepperdine.

The awards were handed out as part of the sixth annual West Coast Conference Honors Dinner, held Tuesday night at the Dolce Hayes Mansion in San Jose, Calif.

In 2014-15, the Cougars captured West Coast Conference titles in women's cross country, women's soccer, women's volleyball and softball. San Diego won regular season championships in men's soccer, men's tennis and baseball.

Overall, BYU finished atop the Commissioner's Cup standings with 89.0 points, besting second place San Diego (87.0 points) and third place Gonzaga University (77.0 points). Pepperdine and the University of San Francisco shared fourth place with 73.0 points, followed by Saint Mary's College (64.5 points). Loyola Marymount (63.0 points), Santa Clara (62.0 points), University of the Pacific (54.5 points) and the University of Portland (54.5 points) round out the 2014-15 standings.
