PROVO -- In the final home game of the season, the BYU women’s basketball team came back from a 16-point deficit to seize a 56-52 victory against San Diego State Saturday and secure a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title.

"I'm real proud of this team," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "I think they really showed character being down and then coming back. A lot of players stepped up when they needed to and it's a joy to coach all of them."

Senior Coriann Fraughton scored 10 points for the Cougars in her final game at the Marriott Center, adding eight rebounds to her performance. Fellow senior Jazmine Foreman dished out six assists and snatched three steals.

The Cougars got off to a slow start, trailing 18-12 after just 12 minutes of action in the first. Unable to cut into the lead, BYU couldn’t stop the Aztecs from taking a 12-point lead as the clock ran down. Falling behind on rebounds and getting into foul trouble hurt the Cougars, leading to a 34-24 Aztec lead going into halftime.

"I told them at half time that things aren't going to be given to them," Judkins said. "I said they were going to need to take it and make the comeback. Each one of those kids can make a play to help this team be better."

Back from half, an 8-2 Aztec streak put the Cougars behind 44-28 before a 7-2 BYU surge cut the lead to 46-35 with 11:55 left to play.

"Even though we were down, we knew we were going to come back little by little, even if it was little by little," Fraughton said. "We believed the whole game we'd win and we stuck with our principles."

Trapping the Aztecs in the backcourt led to 13 SDSU turnovers in the second half and 10 points off those turnovers.

At 9:41, a Foreman assist led to Fraughton hitting a key jumper, boosting Cougar momentum and bringing the score within seven. Kim Parker followed with a three-pointer.

The Cougars kept up their attack with jumpers from Fraughton and Foreman, tying the game 47-47 at 6:58.

With 1:32 left in the game, senior Haley Hall drained a trey from the corner, taking the lead to 54-52 in favor of BYU for the first time of the half. Free throws from Hall put four points between the Cougars and Aztecs for the 56-52 win.

"I'm going to miss those seniors. We've gone through a lot together," Judkins said. "They've grown and I've grown too. I think when you grow together that is something special. Depth, belief and execution can win a lot of games and that's what these girls did tonight."

SDSU's Jessika Bradley led the game with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sajoyia Griffin scored 11 points with six rebounds.

The Cougars now head to New Mexico Wednesday, starting off the final week of regular season play with a matchup at 7 p.m.

Team

-With the win, the Cougars go undefeated at home in conference play for the 2011 season.

-The win also guarantees a share in the 2011 Mountain West Conference regular season title.

-BYU is now on a 10-game winning streak, the most its had since the 2008-09 season.

-The 1,450 fans in attendance for Senior Day were a season- and conference-high at home this year.

-BYU is now 5-5 when they are outrebounded by their opponent, 18-1 when they recorded less than 16 turnovers and 12-1 when they play in the Marriott Center. The match-up against SDSU was just the 8th time this season that the Cougars haven't led at halftime.

-Senior Coriann Fraughton's 11 points tallied for her 20th season double-figure performance and third time this season she's been the only player in double digits.

-Jennifer Hamson and Dani Peterson recorded their first season steals against SDSU with one apiece.

Fresh off a road win at CSU and after getting coach Judkins his 200th career victory, the BYU women’s basketball team plays its final home game on Saturday.

In first place in the MWC, and on a nine-game win streak, the Cougar women (20-7, 12-1) host SDSU (12-13, 6-7) Sat. Feb. 26 in a 3 p.m., start. BYU’s five seniors will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.

-BYU head coach Jeff Judkins picked up his 200th career victory in the 64-55 road win at CSU on 2/23/11

-Mindy Bonham has tallying a total of 1,216 points as of 2/24/11, which puts her in 16th place out of 20 on BYU’s 1,000-Points Club. She needs 69 points to tie for 15th place with Ambrosia Anderson’s 1,285 career points.

-Bonham has dished out a grand total of 444 career assists as of 2/24/11, which puts her in fifth place all time. She surpassed current assistant coach Stacy Jensen’s 432 with the 11 she dished out in the home win over TCU. She now needs 15 to tie with Karina Zapata for fourth place with 459 career assists.

TEAM CAPTAINS SELECTED

Mindy Bonham and Haley Hall have been chosen by their teammates as co-captians for the 2010-11 season. This is Hall’s third straight co-captain selection.

PLAYER UPDATES/INJURIES

Freshmen Morgan Bailey and Stephanie Rovetti will redshirt the 2010-11 season.

Sophomore forward Alexis Kaufusi will not finish the rest of this season after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last week. The team will be wearing a white patch with a purple bow, her initials and her number on their team uniforms the rest of the year.

SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

In the latest MWC standings, San Diego State is in fourth place with a (12-13, 6-7) record. The Aztecs enter the week on a four-game win streak with their latest victory, a 68-50 home win over Air Force. Two players are scoring in double figures for SDSU with Paris Johnson’s 14.9 points per game and a 7.8 average in the rebound category. Courtney Clements contributes 12.4 points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Jessika Bradley leads the way in the rebound category grabbing a team high 7.9 board per contest. Coco Davis has the most assists with 145 and steals with 35. Head coach Beth Burns is in her sixth season with the women’s basketball program guiding the team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament last year.

Last Meeting – in San Diego on Jan. 26 (BYU won 65-55)

The BYU rallied back after an early deficit to get the 65-55 win over SDSU. Junior forward Kristen Riley recorded a new career-high 23 points in her explosive performance against the Aztecs on the road. She also added seven rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Teammate Coriann Fraughton and Mindy Bonham joined Riley in double-figures with 14 points apiece. The Aztecs went on a 10-0 run early in the first half to give them the 14-4 lead after six minutes of action. From there, however, the Cougars took back control of the game as they went on a 30-12 scoring streak to close out the half with a five-point lead. Riley led all players with 13 points as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.

BYU extended their lead in the second half with a 9-0 run after being back from the half for just three minutes. Six of those nine points came from Riley.

The Cougars finished out the game, tallying 32 rebounds to the Aztec’s 26 and 22 assists to San Diego State’s nine. BYU senior guard Mindy recorded nine assists herself.

WHAT’S NEXT

After the home game against SDSU, the Cougar team finishes league play on the road. They travel to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico on Tues. Mar. 1 and then travel to Laramie to battle Wyoming on Sat. Mar. 5.

The following week it’s on to Las Vegas for the 2011 MWC Women’s Basketball Championships from the Thomas & Mack Center Mar. 8-12. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA tournament.
