Undefeated In Hawaii For Women

LAIE -- The BYU women’s basketball team (5-3) went undefeated in this year’s Hukilau Invitational with a 70-44 win over the University of San Diego in Laie, Hawaii, Saturday.

Senior Mindy Bonham led all scorers with 19 points, a season-high, on 9-for-13 shooting. Teammates Coriann Fraughton and Kristen Riley joined Bonham in double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.

Redshirt freshman Kim Parker dished out six assists in the game for a season-and career-high.

"This is a great team effort today with points from everyone," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "A great finish in the tournament. We played a very solid defensive game in the first half. Mindy had a great game for us, she did a great job. Kristen and Coriann played really well also. We're getting much better as a team and improving with each game we play."

The Cougars started out a little rocky in the first half with a 10-point deficit after just four minutes of play but turned the game around on a jumper from Bonham.

The Cougars continued to dominate in the second half, going up by as much as 27 points.

Morgan Woodrow and Sara Vanderhorst were the two players in double-figures for Hawaii with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

BYU improves to 5-0 when leading at the half and 4-0 when they outrebound their opponent.

Up next for BYU is a game on December 9, against Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv.

Team

The 13 points that BYU allowed in the first half are the least points scored in a first or a second half by any Cougar opponent so far this year.

Three players scored in double figures in the game marking the sixth straight time this season that at least three players put up double digits in points.

BYU improved to 5-0 when leading at the half and are 4-0 when outrebounding opponents. In the win over the Toreros, the Cougars grabbed 39 rebounds to San Diego’s 35.

In the game versus San Diego, BYU had 10 turnovers. When the Cougars have 16 and less turnovers they are 4-1.

Player

Mindy Bonham tallied 19 points for her second straight, sixth this year and 46th overall double figure game. The points were season, game and team highs.

Coriann Fraughton scored 11 points for her sixth, 33rd and third straight

Kristen Riley put up 10 points in the win recording her fourth on the season, her 16th overall and second straight double figure outing of the year.

Kim Parker dished out six assists in the game for new season and career highs.

Cougars Compete At Hukilau Invitational

After finishing second in the Hilton-Concord Thanksgiving Classic, the BYU women’s basketball team (3-3) travels to Laie, Hawai’i to play in the Hukilau Invitational.

On Dec. 3 the Cougars battle BYU-Hawaii (1-3) then on Sat. Dec. 4 they will matchup against the University of San Diego (4-2). Both games tip off at 2 p.m. Hawaii Time.

The BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball team has a 1-3 record heading into this weekend’s Hukilau Invitational. They will play the University of San Diego on Thurs. Dec. 2 before playing the Cougar women on Fri. Dec. 3. Richelle Rieben, a 5-5 senior guard leads the Seasiders in scoring with an average of 20.3 points per game. On the rebounds category, Madison Kite tops the list grabbing an average of 7.3 boards per contest, while Dara Tompkison has a team high 20 assists on the year . As a team, BYU-Hawaii is averaging 67.2 points and 33.0 rebounds per game. Head coach Hiram Akina is in his first year leading the women’s basketball program.

UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

The University of San Diego has a 4-2 overall record after losing in overtime 63-72 to MWC foe and instate rival San Diego State on Tues. Nov. 30.The Toreros and Seasiders play each other on Thurs. Dec. 2 in the first game of the 2010 Hukilau Invitational. San Diego has three players scoring in double digits led by 18.0 points from junior guard Dominique Conners. Sam Child follows with 13.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Senior forward Emily Hatch rounds out the players in double figure scoring with 10.0 points and team high 9.2 boards per contest. Conners dishes out the most assists and steals on the team with a total of 17 and 15 respectively. As a team, the Toreros are scoring 70.5 points, grabbing 37.8 boards and 11.3 assists a game. Head coach Cindy Fisher is in her sixth year at the helm of San Diego’s women’s basketball program. The Toreros compete in the West Coast Conference, a league the Cougars will join beginning next season.

After returning from the Hukilau Invitational on the BYU-Hawaii campus, the Cougars travel a short distance to Orem, to battle Utah Valley University on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., before hosting Weber State on Dec. 11 and Portland State on Dec. 18. Both of the home games begin at 3 p.m.
