Cougars Slip Past CSU On the Road

Image

COLORADO SPRINGS -- A second half comeback effort succeeded as BYU overcame a six-point deficit just after the break to top the Colorado State Rams 53-51 on Wednesday.

“We struggled offensively,” said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. “But Cassie had a great game today. She made some big baskets, and she got us the win.”

Colorado State jumped out to an 8-4 lead and the Cougars trailed through most of the first half. Cassie King had eight points in the first half, and BYU went in to the break trailing by three, 20-17.

The lead changed four times in the second half before the Cougars finally took the lead for good at the 5:08 mark on a three-point shot made by Coriann Wood.

Cassie King lead all scorers with 15 points, and had eight boards for a game-high. Shawnee Slade also had eight rebounds, which tied her season high. King shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field for the game, and scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season and twelfth in her career. She was the only Cougar in double-figures.

“Shawnee, Coriann, and Jazmine [Foreman] all had big baskets when we needed them,” said Judkins.

The Cougars improve to 16-5, (6-3 MWC), while the Rams drop to 7-16 (2-8, MWC) overall. The Cougars outrebounded CSU 42-35, and outscored the Rams 28-20 in the paint. BYU is 10-0 when outrebounding its opponent.

BYU returns home to face off against TCU in the Marriott Center on Sat., Feb. 14, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on BYUTV, and stat and radio feeds can be accessed online.

The Cougars then head to New Mexico to take on the Lobos. The game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the mtn.
