SAN -- A tough road outing was made more difficult by BYU’s shooting woes as they fell to San Diego State 56-36 in San Diego Saturday after shooting just 12-of-51 (24 percent) from the field.

San Diego State scored first and jumped to a 6-2 lead at the 17:59 mark and never looked back. The Cougars cut the lead to one, 10-9, on a Shawnee Slade three-point shot at 13:45, but that is a close they would get during the game.

Aztec center Paris Johnson led all scorers in the game with 15 points, and had a game-high 11 rebounds. Sarah Red-Hostetter led the Cougars with nine points, and Kristen Riley had career-highs with eight rebounds and three blocks.

"We didn't come out and play like we needed to tonight, especially when you play a good team like San Diego State," said coach Jeff Judkins. "We needed to play a lot harder than we did and we just didn't get the job done."

San Diego State turned 24 Cougar turnovers into twenty six points, and the Aztecs out-rebounded BYU 43-33.

The win moves San Diego State‘s record to 13-4 (4-1, MWC), while BYU falls to 13-4 (3-2, MWC).

The Cougars return home for the first women’s basketball game for the 2008-09 Deseret First Duel when they host Utah on at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28 in the Marriott Center. BYUTV will broadcast the game live, and audio and stat feeds will be available online.

BYU will then head back out on the road to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2:00 p.m. Live stat and audio feeds can be accessed online.
