LONG BEACH -- A strong offensive effort powered the Cougars as they took down Long Beach State on the road 66-49 on Sat., Dec. 20. BYU never trailed in the game.
“This is a great win for us,” said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. “this is a team that really believes in itself and each other.”
Tough defense helped the Cougars put away the 49ers, as BYU was able to convert 15 first half turnovers into 15 points. Long Beach State had 20 turnovers in the game.
Coriann Wood had 10 points and Shawnee Slade chipped in nine in the first half to lead the Cougars to a 38-17 halftime lead. Wood would finish with 10 points, her fifth double-digit performance of the season and sixth of her career.
Mindy Nielson opened the second half with two straight three-pointers, and would finish with 12 points.
Slade led all scorers in the game with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting, and Cassie King had seven rebounds to go with her six points. Slade's 14 points were the 27th double-digit point outing of her BYU career.
In the winning effort, the Cougars improve to 8-2, and extend their season-high win streak to six games. The start is the best for BYU since the 2005-06 season when it began 8-1. The 49ers drop to 2-7 in 2008.
BYU shot on 27 percent (6-of-22) from behind the three-point line, but moves to 5-2 when making at least five three-point shots.
The Cougars return to Provo to defend the Marriott Center on Tuesday, Dec. 30 when they face off against Arkansas State at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on BYU Radio and BYUTV.
BYU then heads on the road to face Portland at 2:00 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 3.
