Cougs Come Up Short in San Diego

Image

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (Jan. 23, 2008) -- For the first time in BYU head coach Jeff Judkins' career at BYU, the BYU women's basketball team (8-8, 2-2) lost to San Diego State (10-7, 1-4) in San Diego Wednesday, 62-39, in the team's second conference loss in a row.

Junior center Cassie King led the team in scoring with eight points, including her second three-point bucket of the season. The Aztecs had 28 points in the paint compared to the Cougars' 14, 31 points off of turnovers to the Cougars' three, and 16 fast-break points to the Cougars' six. With the loss, the Cougars also fall to 0-5 when trailing at the half and 0-4 when their opponent shoots better then 50 percent from the field.

"There's definitely a lot of things we need to work on," BYU assistant coach Stacy Jensen said. "We folded under pressure and turned the ball over too many times. I believe we have a lot of talent and get can back into it. We just need to step up as a team, top to bottom, and turn up the heat."

The Cougars shot only 15 percent from the field in the first half and racked up 21 turnovers, the most in any half this season. The Aztecs also had 10 fast-break points to BYU's two as SDSU took a 37-11 lead into the locker room at the half.

BYU played much better in the second half, scoring 27 points and turning the ball over only 10 times. The team was also able to almost double its field goal percentage in the second half. Despite the increased effort, SDSU's consistent pressure defense prevented the Cougars from closing the gap.

"We came out flat today and didn't perform," King said. "Coach Judkins got on our cases at the half, and we came out better in the second half. It just wasn't enough. They're a quick team and they pressured us. We just didn't counter it."

The Cougars will head to the Pit in Albuquerque on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their next game against New Mexico. The Lobos are 2-3 in conference play and lost to BYU at home last season, 63-59.
