Carling Goes for 22 in Loss at Sacred Heart

Image

FAIRFIELD -- The BYU women's basketball team lost its second game of a two-game road trip in Connecticut with a 49-44 loss at Sacred Heart Saturday despite a 22-point performance from senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling.

Gillespie-Carling made 6-11 from three-point land in the game, and marked her fourth highest point total of her career and highest this season. She also tallied one assist, four rebounds, two steals, and one block on the afternoon. Fellow senior Lauren Riley-Varley also contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

"I'm very disappointed in how we played today," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said after the game. "We're better than this. We didn't execute correctly, we can't score, we can't rebound, and we don't have any leadership."

Three three-pointers in the first ten minutes propelled the blue and white to an early 13-9 lead. The Pioneers took the lead at 19-17 with two minutes left in the half, but Gillespie-Carling hit her third triple for her ninth point of the half to retake the lead at 20-19 with 1:20 to go in the first period. Two free throws late in the half, though, gave Sacred Heart a 21-20 lead going into the locker room.

Gillespie-Carling's fourth bucket from behind the arc gave the lead back to BYU at 23-21 to just minutes into the second half. The Pioneers made a run, though, and took a six-point lead, 33-27, with just over 11 minutes to go in the game.

With 4:25 to go in the game, Gillespie-Carling drained her sixth shot from down town to pull within two points, down 40-42. Then, with 2:14 left in the game, freshman Keilani Moeaki hit a right-handed baby hook in the paint to tie the game at 42-42.

Sacred Heart answered quickly to take another two-point lead at 44-42. Gillespie-Carling tied the game at 44-44 with 30 seconds to go in the game. With 14 seconds left, the Pioneers were able to draw a foul and get to the free-throw line and take the lead 45-44. The Cougars knocked the rebound on the second free throw out of bounds to give the ball back to Sacred Heart.

BYU had to resort to forcing Sacred Heart to the free-throw line from there, and the Pioneers increased their lead to 49-44 by the end of the game. When all was said and done, the Pioneers won the game at the line as 18 fouls were charged to BYU in the game compared to six charged to Sacred Heart.

New Mexico State is BYU's next opponent, and the two teams will play in Provo Wednesday at 4:30 in the Marriott Center. The Cougars will then host cross-town rival Utah Valley Saturday, Dec. 8 also at 4:30 in the Marriott Center.
