Riley-Varley Leads Cougs to First Win

Image

SANTA BARBARA -- The BYU women's basketball team started its season on the right foot with a 61-50 win at UC Santa Barbara Friday, led by senior Lauren Riley-Varley with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cougars shot an even 50 percent from the field (23-46) and 45.5 percent from down town (5-11). As a team, BYU hit 10 of 14 free throws and pulled down 37 boards. Senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling led all scorers with 17 points and hit 3-6 three-point shots. It was the 48th time in her career scoring in double figures. After the game, the BYU coaching staff gave credit to the team's preparation for Friday's game.

"One thing that Coach Judkins emphasizes is routine," BYU assistant coach Alli Bills said. "We try to do the same things on the road that we do at home, and our team is all about being focused on the game, no matter where we are."

The Gauchos' full-court pressure gave the Cougars some trouble in the first half. BYU gave up 16 turnovers in the first half, but 54 percent shooting from the field propelled the team to a nine-point lead at the half, 30-21. Riley-Varley led BYU at the half with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

BYU pulled away in the second half and never looked back. The Cougars were 4-8 from behind the arc in the second half and made 7-10 free throws. Gillespie-Carling tallied 10 points in the latter half, and BYU recorded 30 rebounds in the period.

The next hurdle the Cougars will face will be at Arkansas State on Tuesday. The home opener for the team will be against Fresno State on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
