DENVER -- Despite a strong start, BYU could not recover from a big first-half run by the University of Utah as the Cougars fell to the No.2-seeded Utes, 64-48, Friday at the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Championship in Denver.
With the MWC semifinal loss, BYU now hopes its 19-10 record qualifies the Cougars for their sixth postseason invitation in seven years. Utah, 24-6, will take on top-seed New Mexico Saturday for the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"You have to give Utah credit -- they don't beat themselves," BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. "They have smart players and they are very well coached."
After getting off to leads of 7-2 and 9-4 in the game's first three minutes, BYU was outscored 22-3 over the next nine minutes as the Utes built a 26-12 advantage. Utah scored 11 straight points during the run until BYU freshman Mallary Gillespie finally added to the Cougars' scoring column with a nice spin move to the middle to just beat the shot clock. Gillespie's bucket was the start of a 15-9 BYU run that reduced Utah's lead to eight at the break, 35-27.
During the run, BYU was able to score in the key thanks to some nice passing. Dani Kubik scored both of her first-half buckets and Danielle Cheesman converted a bucket and then made a nice assist to Ambrosia Anderson for another score in the paint. Chessman and Anderson led the Cougars with six points in the opening half.
When Cougar point guard Julie Sullivan opened the second half with back-to-back field goals, BYU appeared ready to make the final 20 minutes a battle, trailing by only four points at 35-31. But BYU would not get any closer as Utah continually hit shots to kill any Cougar momentum.
Utah's big weapon on the night was its three-point shooting. The Utes made 11-of-24 (.458) long-range bombs to make up for 34 percent shooting overall from the floor. BYU outshot the Utes, converting on 44 percent of its attempts, but the Cougars made only two treys and were outscored at the free-throw line 13-4.
Sullivan led BYU with 10 points before fouling out with 6:07 remaining. Anderson, Cheesman and Kubik each added eight points for BYU. Cheesman grabbed 10 rebounds and Melinda Johnsen contributed five assists to lead the Cougars.
"Julie (Sullivan) got in foul trouble, which put her in a tough situation," Judkins said. "She just wanted it so bad she didn't let the game come to her. I'm proud of our team. We've had a great year. We thought we could get this one but sometimes you want something too bad and you try too hard."
Utah was paced by MWC Co-Player of the Year Kim Smith, who tallied 19 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Lana Sitterud also made three treys for the Utes on her way to 10 points, while fellow conference Co-Player of the Year Shona Thorburn dished out a game-high seven assists.

With a third place regular season finish in the MWC, the BYU women's basketball team (18-9, 9-5) plays Colorado State (15-12, 6-8) on Wed. Mar. 9, at 8:30 p.m., at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
The Cougars are the No. 3 seed and the Rams are No. 6 in the 2005 MWC Women's Basketball Championships.

BYU In The MWC Championships - History
The Cougar women have advanced to the championship game in four of the five previous MWC tournaments, winning in 2002 by defeating UNLV 61-46.
That same year, BYU went on to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.
During last year's MWC tournament the Cougars were the No. 6 seed, losing in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed UNLV, 57-60.

About CSU
The Rams finished the MWC season in 6th place with a 15-12, 6-8 record. They tied for fifth place in league play with UNLV, but the Rebels earned the No. 5 seed as they defeated New Mexico during the regular season. CSU has three players scoring in double figures with Melissa Dennett leading the way. She's averaging 14.4 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game. Lindsay Thomas follows with 12.6 points and 7.8 boards a game. Teammate Vanessa Espinoza rounds out the top three in points with 10.6 per game. She tallies 2.7 rebounds per game, and has the second best assist average dishing out 3.1 per game. The team shoots 43 percent from the field, 68 percent at the line and 32 percent when shooting from behind the arc.

Series Record: 39-22 in favor of the Cougars
Last Meeting: BYU swept the series against the Rams this year winning at Moby Arena for the first time since th 1994 season when both teams were part of the WAC. The two teams have not met in the tournament since th 2001 year when CSU beat BYU 59-56 in the title game.
Head Coach - Jeff Judkins
Overall Record: 76-44, begins his fourth season at BYU.
Under Coach Judkins, the team has gone to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.
An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.
He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.
He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.
After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.
He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (24), Jordan (22), Jenna (20), Jaime (17), Jaxson (14).
