Hamson leads BYU to 69-64 win over Santa Clara in season finale

PROVO, Utah – Sara Hamson’s 18 points helped lead BYU women’s basketball to a 69-64 win over Santa Clara on Saturday in the team’s final regular season game.

“I’m really happy with the end of this game,” BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. “It was one of those games that I knew we could win, but both halves were scary. I have a young team, but Sara really helped us out. I think it was one of the best games she's ever played. She was a force both on defense and offense and it really paid off tonight. We’re excited to go into the postseason, give it all we have and hopefully do some damage.”

Hamson made all 10 free throw attempts on her way to a career-high 18 points while tying her career high in blocks with nine, pulling in seven rebounds and recording two steals. Paisley Johnson scored 17 points while contributing nine rebounds and three takeaways. Shaylee Gonzales recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out seven assists.

Johnson opened up the scoring for BYU (23-6, 15-3) with a layup and Gonzales hit a 3-pointer to give the Cougars the early lead 5-3 over Santa Clara (13-16, 6-12). Brenna Chase knocked down a wide open 3-point shot and Johnson added a 3-pointer of her own to contribute to a 9-3 run to make the score 14-6. Jasmine Moody and Gonzales each scored a jumper while Hamson blocked three Bronco shots in the last four minutes of the period to help BYU lead 18-13 at the end of the quarter.

Santa Clara began the second period with a 7-0 lead to claim a 20-18 advantage. Gonzales tied the game at 20-all the next BYU possession and the two teams traded baskets with Johnson scoring her second 3-pointer to tie the game at 25-all. The Cougars reclaimed the lead 28-25 with a basket from Moody and a free throw from Gonzales. Off of assists from Gonzales, Hamson scored two layups in the final 90 seconds of the half to put BYU up 32-27 at the break.

Hamson blocked three attempts in the first two minutes of the third period to go along with four points to help extend the Cougars’ lead to 39-27. The sophomore center continued the run with four made free throws with Gonzales scoring a layup and free throw to push the lead to 46-27. BYU’s defense held the Broncos scoreless for the first four minutes of the third period leading to the 14-0 run. Hamson added two more free throws while Caitlyn Alldredge scored a layup and free throw to maintain the advantage 51-33. Johnson made a layup and split a pair of free throws to give the Cougars the 56-39 lead at the end of the period.

Shalae Salmon made a basket in the post and Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws to start the fourth quarter while Santa Clara hit four 3-pointers to cut BYU’s lead to single digits 60-51. Chase re-extended the Cougars’ lead to double digits 63-51 with a 3-point make midway through the period. The Broncos continued to chip away at the deficit bringing the score within five points 63-58 with 1:45 left in the game. Gonzales scored a layup in traffic and Johnson split a pair of free throws to put BYU up 66-58 with 25 seconds left on the game clock. Gonzales made one of two free throws with Santa Clara knocking down two 3-point jumpers to cut the Cougars’ lead to 67-64 with 2.5 seconds left in the game. Hamson secured BYU’s 69-64 win over Santa Clara with two free throws in the final seconds of the game.

The Cougars two seniors, MaCayla Hanks Longson and Caitlyn Alldredge were recognized at the conclusion of the contest.

BYU will compete next at the 2019 UCU West Coast Conference Basketball Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The Cougars have clinched an automatic bid to play in the tournament’s semifinal on Monday, March 11. The final seeding and schedule will be released on Sunday afternoon.

  • The Cougars shot 35.5 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from 3 and 73.1 percent from the charity stripe.
  • The team had three players score in double-digits for the 14th time this season.
  • The team is now 17-1 when they lead at halftime, as BYU was on top 32-27 going into the locker room.
  • After tallying 16 assists, the Cougars are 14-2 when dishing out the most assists of the game and are 13-2 when grabbing more rebounds after recording 48.
  • On the night, BYU hit six 3-pointers to increase its record to 21-3 when scoring five or more treys.

Player Notes

  • Sara Hamson scored a career-best 18 points and tallied a season-best nine blocks that tied her career-high. The center also brought down seven rebounds while adding two assists and two steals.
  • Shaylee Gonzales recorded her fourth double-double this season after scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Her rebounds tied her career-best and she also dished out seven assists while grabbing three steals.
  • Paisley Johnson tallied 17 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.

In final WCC game, Cougar women host Santa Clara Saturday

PROVO, Utah — With a (22-6, 14-3) record, BYU women’s basketball plays its final WCC game of the 2019 season Saturday. The Cougars host Santa Clara (13-15, 6-11) at 2 p.m. MST. The game vs. the Broncos is slated to air live on BYUtv. The two seniors on the team will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.

ABOUT BYU

  • After the 82-59 home victory over San Francisco, the Cougars extended their win streak to five games where they sit in second place in the league standings. When playing at home, BYU has a 7-1 record in conference contests.
  • With the win over USF on Thursday night, BYU improved its record to 16-1 when leading at the half; 20-3 when making at least 5 treys; 13-2 when dishing out more assists; and 13-1 when it pulls down more rebounds than its opponents.
  • Freshman Shaylee Gonzales, who has scored in double-digits in 26 games, leads the team in scoring and assists with 16.4 and 4.2 averages, respectively. Sophomore Paisley Johnson contributes 14.4 points while junior Brenna Chase puts up 12.6 points a contest. Chase leads in steals (2.4 spg). Sophomore center Sara Hamson leads the team in rebounding (5.7) and blocks (2.4). Senior forward Jasmine Moody ranks second in rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards a game.
  • The Cougars are averaging 68.8 points and 38 rebounds a game. They are holding opponents to just 62.5 points per contest. BYU is shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from behind the arc and 69.8 percent from the free-throw line.
  • In the first meeting with the Broncos this season on Dec. 29, the Cougars picked up the 54-44 victory in Santa Clara. BYU leads the overall series 16-2. Santa Clara has never won a game in the Marriott Center in the series history.

  • The Broncos have a 13-15, 6-11 record on the year and sit in seventh place in the league standings.  Santa Clara recorded league wins over San Diego, San Francisco, LMU and Pacific. They swept the series with Portland. All but one of those wins occurred on the road
  • The Broncos have two players scoring in double digits with Tia Hay tallying a team-best 15.2 points a game. Ashlyn Herlihy follows with 11.1 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game. Hay also leads the way in assists and in steals with 4.3 and 2.0 averages, respectively.
