11 Cougars receive WCC All-Academic honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Eleven BYU women’s soccer student-athletes received West Coast Conference academic honors, the conference announced Monday.

The awards are given to WCC athletes who excelled this year both on the field and in the classroom. To be considered, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior; maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average; and be a significant contributor to her team.

Mikayla Colohan, Bella Folino and Rachel McCarthy were named to the All-Academic First Team.

Colohan was also named the WCC Player of the Year, after a historic performance this season. The senior received WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention honors in 2018 and 2019. During the 2020-21 season, the midfielder started all 16 games for BYU and played 1,343 minutes. Colohan went on a nine-game scoring streak, and recorded 11 goals, five assists, 69 shots and 34 shots on goal. The All-American led the WCC in goals and points this season, with 27. Colohan now has 35 goals in her career, putting her ninth all-time on BYU’s career scoring list.

McCarthy was a powerhouse off the bench this season, starting two games and playing in 15 for 852 minutes. During those minutes, the midfielder recorded nine goals, seven assists, 26 shots and 18 shots on goal. The sophomore finished the season third in the WCC in goals and second for assists. McCarthy was also named to the All-WCC First Team this season.

Folino had a 4.0 GPA this season, while starting 13 of BYU’s games after coming back from injury in 2019. The sophomore scored eight goals and added two assists. She was third in goals scored for the Cougars this season.

Eight other BYU women’s soccer student-athletes, including Ashton Brockbank Johnson, Josie Gelalich, Grace Johnson, Makaylie Moore Call, Brecken Mozingo, Jamie Shepherd, Cassidy Smith and Cameron Tucker received WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention.
