BYU gymnasts dominate MRGC Awards in Week 9

LOGAN, Utah - On Monday, the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference honored three BYU gymnasts with five awards due to their outstanding performances on senior night last week. 

No. 19 BYU posted a 196.450 to defeat Washington's 195.800 and Illinois State's 192.800 in a tri-meet at the Marriott Center on Friday. With solid performances from all six gymnasts on the uneven bars, the Cougars got an overall score of 49.450 on the apparatus, which is the second-highest score in program history.

Senior Sadie Miner-Van Tassell competed for the all-around and matched her career-high score of 39.525 to earn her eighth-straight MRGC Gymnast of the Week award. In this same competition, Miner-Van Tassell also posted a 9.900 on vault to take home a shared MRGC Vault Specialist of the Week honor. 

Miner-Van Tassell also shared MRGC Floor Specialist of the Week accolades with senior Brittney Vitkauskas as the teammates tied for first in the event with matching 9.925s. BYU fifth-year senior Haley Pitou posted a new career-high score of 9.975 on bars to take home the shared honor for MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week with Boise State’s Emily Muhlenhaupt. Pitou's bars score also tied the BYU record for the event set by current BYU assistant coach Brogan Evanson in 2004.
