KYLE, Texas — BYU women’s golf began its 2022 spring campaign with a 36-hole total of 592 on the first day at the Texas State Invitational to take a one-shot lead into the final round at Plum Creek Golf Course.

With four Cougars finishing the first 36-holes in the top-25, BYU posted a 16-over par, 297-295—592 to lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (297-295—592) by one shot. Incarnate Word sits in third at 26-over par, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in fourth at 27-over. Sam Houston State completes the top-5 with a 32-over opening day.

“The team has worked really hard this winter to prepare for the spring season,” said assistant coach Lea Garner. “I am real proud of the way they played and the solid scores they posted in our first tournament of the spring. We look forward to playing even better tomorrow.”

Annick Haczkiewicz posted a 4-under 68 in round one followed by a second round 75. Her opening round 68 ties her career low round as a Cougar. The senior finished at 1-under-par and takes a share of the lead into the final round tomorrow. She is tied with Ellie Szeryk of Texas A&M, who had rounds of 71-72—143. Lilly Thomas of Tulsa is in third at 73-71—144.

BYU senior Allysha Mae Mateo is just one shot back after posting rounds of 77-68—145 and sits in a tie for fourth place.

“Annick and Allysha were really locked in today,” said Garner. “They both hit the ball well and made some putts which led to a lot of birdies.”

Addie Anderson is tied for 19th through the first 36-holes with rounds of 77-75—152. Lila Galeai was the fourth Cougar to finish the day in the top-25 after posting scores of 75-78—153. Kerstin Fotu rounded out the day for the Cougars with a 81-77—158.

The Cougars will play with Tulsa and Incarnate Word in the final round and will tee off at 8:30 CST Tuesday morning. BYU is in search of its third win of the 2021-22 season. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
