PROVO -- In its 10th-straight win, the BYU men’s volleyball team (20-7, 14-6 MPSF) defeated Cal Baptist (18-10, 8-1 NAIA) 3-0 to complete the weekend sweep.

“Cal Baptist serves the ball extremely well and they kept us on our toes," said BYU head coach Shawn Patchell. "We were excited to see some of our bench players get some time tonight and do so well."

Led by senior opposite hitter Kent Tuttle, the Cougars came out with another win. Tuttle tallied 17 kills and four digs on the night. Junior middle blocker Otavio Souza started his first match of the season, posting nine kills on .727 hitting.

With three different setters in for the match, senior Reed Chilton led in assists with 25 on the night. Libero Joel Silva had 11 digs on the night to lead his Cougars on defense.

Set one caught the Cougars on their heels, struggling to score a run against the Lancers. With 14 ties during the set, the Cougars battled to finally come out with a 33-31 victory. A balanced attack from Tuttle (five kills), Andrew Stewart (four kills) and Futi Tavana (four kills) and 16 assists from Chilton helped the Cougars find themselves up 1-0.

Tuttle led the way in set two with five kills on .500 hitting. With back-and-forth play until the Cougars posted a 4-0 run at 8-4 with kills from Stewart, Chilton and Tavana, and a CBU attack error, the Cougars maintained the lead the rest of the set. Tuttle put the set away with a kill at 30-23.

With several players coming off the bench to finish off the match in set three, Joe Kauliakamoa was in to set while Quentin Smith, Ryan Boyce and Jeff Robinson made key plays come out with another win. Tuttle once again led on the attack in set three with seven kills, Souza added five on .667 hitting.

"Joe is an excellent setter and did very well tonight," said Patchell. "Quentin also did a great job in his first match in the Smith Fieldhouse."

The Cougars will next host Cal State Northridge April 16-17 at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse to wrap up the MPSF regular season. On Jan. 8, 2010 in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Cougars fell to the Matadores 3-1 in the third game of the season.
