Cougar doubles teams excel at ITA Regionals

LAS VEGAS – Cougar doubles teams excelled for BYU men’s tennis on day two of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships Thursday in Las Vegas. Two Cougar duos advanced in the doubles main draw.

“We have some teams remaining in the main draw of doubles tomorrow,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “We’re hopeful they continue advancing.”

Freshman David Ball and sophomore Jacob Sullivan teamed up to beat a doubles team from the Air Force Academy 8-5 to advance and teammates Francis Sargeant and Andrey Goryachkov ousted a duo from Nevada in commanding fashion, 8-1. Both teams will compete in the next round on Friday at 9 a.m.

Sullivan and Goryachkov played well in singles Thursday before both eventually fell in the round of 16. Sullivan won a close match in the round of 32, beating Toby Mitchell of Boise State 7-6, 7-5 before falling to Andrew Poustie of Nevada 7-5, 6-1. Goryachkov ousted Yannik James of Denver 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 but fell to Denver’s Henry Craig 6-2, 6-0. Ball also won both of his matches Thursday in consolation play.

Cougars Victor Brown, Aidan Carrazedo, Jeremy Bourgeois and Ball all advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket and will play in the third round Friday.

“Overall, everyone is getting great match experience which is what we need right now,” Pearce said. “I feel like we are making across-the-board improvement as a team, which is a primary positive.”
