Monroe advances to finals of Utah Intercollegiate

SALT LAKE CITY – Freshman Shane Monroe is enjoying another successful tournament to kick-off his college career at BYU. Monroe beat senior teammate, and nationally-ranked, Francis Sargeant 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals Friday in Salt Lake City. He will play in Saturday’s Flight A final at 10 a.m. against Cedric Willems of Utah.

Shane is making his mark by beating Francis who is a proven top collegiate player,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “I’m looking forward to watching them in action tomorrow.”

Sargeant will also compete at 10 a.m. Saturday in the third-place match of Flight A against Utah’s Matt Cowley.

Sophomore Jeremy Bourgeois was on the court for the consolation bracket of Flight B and won both his matches to advance to the consolation final. Bourgeois beat Jaime Barajas of Utah State 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and Jamey Swiggart of Utah by the same score. His consolation final matchup with Utah’s Johan Jonhagen is Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sargeant also teamed up with freshman David Ball to advance to the doubles final on Saturday morning. The Cougar duo beat Dennis Baumgartner and Matt Sweet of Utah State 8-4 in the quarterfinals before beating Utah’s Cowley and Santiago Sierra in the semifinal 8-6. The doubles final is slated for Saturday at 9 a.m. against the Utah duo of Willems and Swiggart.

“I was really happy to see Sargeant and Ball advance to the finals of the doubles bracket,” Pearce said.
