Cougars lead after day one of 58th Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah — No. 44 BYU men's golf leads by 18 shots following the opening 36-holes of the 58th PING Cougar Classic. All five Cougars sit in the top-14 after day one.

Brock Goyen, who is playing as an individual for BYU, finished the day in a tie for second at 9-under par. The Arizona native battled the cold weather to fire scores of 66-69—135 to grab a share of second, four off the 18-hole lead.

Two-time reigning champion Carson Lundell is one back of Goyen in a tie for fourth at 8-under with Tyson Shelley and Elijah Turner, who is also playing as an individual.

Lundell turned in rounds of 68-68—136, carding 11 birdies on day one. Shelley and Turner posted matching rounds of 67-69—136 to sit inside the top-5 through 36 holes.

Keanu Akina posted a 7-under total with rounds of 70-67—137 good for a tie for seventh with David Timmins who turned in rounds of 71-66—137.

Max Brenchley and Zac Jones earned a share of 14th through 36 holes after posting a 4-under, two-round total. Jones recorded scores of 68-72—140 while Brenchley carded rounds of 69-71—140.

BYU shot 33-under on day one to lead the 54-hole championship by 18 shots over Utah Valley who sits in third at 15-under-par. Wyoming is in third at 9-under with CSU Northridge one behind at 8-under. Hawaii rounds out the top-5 at 7-under-par.

The final round of the Cougar Classic will tee off at 9 a.m. MDT with BYU's individuals, Max Brenchley, Brock Goyen, Elijah Turner and Andrew Chin teeing off at 9:00 and 9:10 a.m. The BYU team of Carson Lundell, David Timmins, Tyson Shelley, Keanu Akina and Zac Jones will tee off at 10:30, 10:40 and 10:50 a.m.
