PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golfers Carson Lundell, David Timmins, Elijah Turner and Brock Goyen advanced through local qualifying and will play at the U.S. Amateur at the Ridgewood Country Club, August 15-21 in Paramus, New Jersey.

“There are so many great players in every qualifier, so it was nice to see them step up, play some great golf and earn the opportunity to compete for a national championship,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “The USGA always puts on great events that will really test every part of their game, so I hope they can play the same kind of golf in New Jersey next week.”

Lundell will be making his third-straight trip to the United States Amateur Championship, with Timmins qualifying for the second year in a row. Turner and Goyen will each make their first appearance at the national championship.

The Alpine native comes off a season in which he was named an honorable mention All-American for the second-straight year and led BYU in scoring average, top-25 finishes, top-10s and top-5s while grabbing two individual titles. Lundell was key in the Cougars earning a trip to the 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Championship this past May where they finished 21st.

Timmins had a breakout year as he became a solid force for the Cougars down the stretch. The senior from Sandy recorded four top-15 finishes, three top-10s and two top-5s this season, including a runner-up finish at the Cougar Classic.

“I’m so proud of my guys for working hard all year and earning the opportunity to compete at the highest level,” said captain David Timmins. “Having BYU sweep the Utah qualifier and Brock earn a spot in Arizona shows the effort our team has been making to elevate our play and I am excited to share this experience with three of my good friends.”

Turner posted rounds of 68-69—137 at Alpine Country Club in June to earn a spot in this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship. The Lone Peak product teed it up in six events for the Cougars during the 2021-22 season and will return this fall as a fifth-year senior.

“I played in the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2016 and the experience I had there makes me want to qualify for every USGA championship I can,” said Turner. “The USGA puts on great events at some of the best courses in the country that test every aspect of your game. So, to say that I’m excited to tee it up is an understatement.”

Goyen grabbed a top-10 finish at the 2022 edition of the PING Cougar Classic and, like Turner, will be returning for his fifth year of eligibility with the Cougars. The Gilbert, Arizona product fired rounds of 67-66—133 at Longbow Golf Club to punch his ticket to New Jersey.

“Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur means a lot to me,” said Goyen. “Playing against the top amateurs in the world and coming out on top is always the goal and I couldn't be more excited to go and play with three of my teammates. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to test our game at the highest level before we start the fall season.”
