UVU rallies in the ninth to defeat BYU

OREM, Utah — UVU scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat BYU, 9-8, on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark.

With the victory the Wolverines improve to 14-10 on the year and break a 14-game losing streak to the Cougars. The loss drops BYU to 8-15 on the season, 3-10 on the road.

BYU got off to a fast start scoring four runs in the top of the first on a grand slam to left center by designated hitter Cooper Vest. Utah Valley got a run back in the bottom of the inning on two walks and a double to left center to cut the Cougar lead to 4-1. 

The Wolverines tied the game at 4-4 with a home run in the second inning and two more runs on a walk and two hits in the third. 

Three walks and a warning track sacrifice fly to right field by Luke Anderson gave BYU a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Cougars extended the lead to 7-4 in the fifth with a single by Jacob Wilk, a walk by Chad Call and a two-out double over the centerfielders head by Easton Jones that scored both runners. 

The Cougars picked up another run in the sixth inning on a Vest single through the left side of the infield to score Tate Gambill, who had walked to lead off the inning. The run gave BYU an 8-4 advantage with three innings to play. 

The Wolverines scored five runs in the ninth off a walk, three BYU errors and three singles for the 9-8 victory. All five runs were unearned. 

BYU stays on the road for a three-game conference series at Gonzaga, March 30-31 and April 1, at Patterson Complex in Spokane, Washington.
