PROVO, Utah – BYU track and cross country All-Americans Whittni Orton and Anna Camp-Bennett both broke the women's world record for the fastest mile run while dribbling a basketball on Friday at the Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex.

Orton crossed the finish line first in 4:58.56 which converted to 4:52.71 with an altitude adjustment to shatter the previous world record time of 5:08.57, set earlier this summer by Foot Locker Nationals champion Sydney Masciarelli. Camp-Bennett finished with a time of 5:10.37 that converted to 5:04.28 to also beat Masciarelli’s time.

A seven-time All-American and holder of four BYU school records, Orton can now add World Record Holder to her long list of accomplishments. Orton was a basketball star at Panguitch High School where she led her team to three Utah state championships and was later named the 2015 Deseret News 1A State MVP.

Camp-Bennett was also a standout basketball player while attending Utah’s Millard High School. As a high school senior, she led the team in scoring before eventually helping the Eagles make a run in the state playoffs.

Both Orton and Camp-Bennett were key contributors in helping BYU women’s cross country take second place at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The two seniors were expected to help the Cougars achieve similar success in the 2020 cross country season this fall before the season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
