PROVO, Utah - The BYU women's swimming and diving team won 11 of 13 events en route to beating Oregon State 137-95 Friday night at the Richards Building Pool.

"We want to thank Oregon State for coming and wish them luck tomorrow against Utah," head coach John Brooks said. "I'm very proud of our girls and the way they performed tonight. It was our first win of the season and against a Pac-12 school. It is good momentum for us going into tomorrow. I thought seniors Londyn (Clawson) and Taryn (Toolson Lewis) both swam well tonight and helped our team a lot."

The meet started off with the 200 medley relay where the team of Londyn Clawson, Mallory Harris, Zerlynn Tiang and Sarah Bushnell came in first with a time of 1:47.57.

Following the 200 medley relay, Alina Fong tapped the wall first for the Cougars in the 1000 free followed by Camille Okelberry. Fong finished second with a time of 10.47.56 and Okelberry finished in third with a time of 10.53.15.

In the next two events, BYU finished 1-2. Alia Welsh placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.28 for her first win of the season. Andrea Grant finished in second with a time of 1:55.49. Taryn Toolson Lewis and Alexandria Sorensen finished first and second in the 50 free with times of 23.76 and 23.86, respectively.

Just before the first break, the Cougars finished second through fifth in the 200 IM. Jessica Ampuero came in second with a time of 2:06.25, Kassandra Bispo was third with a time of 2:10.65, Alexandra Dodds was fourth with a time of 2:13.00 and Harris finished in fifth with a time of 2:14.11.

Across the deck in the diving pool, the divers dove against themselves because the Beavers don't have a dive team. Dayna Christensen swept the 1-m and the 3-m events, scoring 283.35 and 287.70, respectively. Raleigh Williams Taylor finished second in the 1-m with a score of 260.70 and fourth in the 3-m with a score of 236.02. Mackenzie Rands finished second in the 3-m with a score of 271.57 and third in the 1-m with a score of 231.90. Haley Francois finished third in the 3-m with a score of 265.65 and fourth in the 1-m with a score of 217.20. Shelby Johnson finished fifth in the 1-m and the 3-m, scoring 215.47 and 208.12 respectively.

After the diving break, the Cougars won the next three events.

Kimberly Welch Doroghian won the 100 fly with a time of 56.01. Tiang finished third with a time of 57.69.

Sorensen, Angela Bennion and Grant finished first through third, respectively, in the 100 free. Sorensen finished with a time of 52.84, Bennion finished with a time of 53.23 and Grant finished with a time of 53.24.

Hailey Campbell finished first in the 100 back with a time of 57.05. Clawson finished third with a time of 57.99.

In the last event of the night, the Cougars took first and second place in the 200 free relay. The team of Campbell, Doroghian, Sorensen and Grant finished first with a time of 1:36.60 and the team of Angela Bennion, Natalie Bennion, Daniele Vaughan and Bushnell finished second with a time of 1:38.56.

BYU returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. MST against the University of Denver at the Richards Building Pool.

Last home meets of the season, senior night

PROVO, Utah – BYU swimming and diving will honor its 11 seniors on Saturday against the University of Denver, a day after the women host Oregon State Friday night at the Richards Building Pool.

The women’s swimming team will host the Beavers on Friday night at 5 p.m. MST and the meet against the Pioneers will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. MST.

The men’s team will honor seniors Gary Arthur, Samuel Bates, Garret Beaman and Brady Wells. The women’s team will honor seniors Kassandra Bispo, Dayna Christensen, Londyn Clawson, Alina Fong, Amanda Heninger, Melissa Manser and Taryn Toolson Lewis.

“We are thrilled to honor the seniors that we have on this team,” head coach John Brooks said. “They have put a lot of time and effort in the past four years and they have really been a great example to our underclassmen.”

The women’s team last faced Oregon State back in 2003 where they fell 131-106. BYU holds a 5-2 record overall against the Beavers in dual meets and are 3-1 in the Richards Building Pool. The first meet between the two schools took place in 1981. The Beavers do not have a dive team, so this meet will consist of 13 events instead of the typical 16-event schedule.

“Oregon State will be great competition for us,” Brooks said. “They are a Pac-12 school with a lot of talent, and it will be good for our girls to race against them on Friday night.”

Last year the teams traveled to Denver and fell in a close meet. The men lost 194.5-105.5 and the women lost 158-142. In the meet, Kimberly Welch Doroghian swept the 100 and 200 fly and the men’s 400-relay team took first. The men hold a 1-1 record all-time and the women are 2-1 all-time against the Pioneers.

“Denver has been a really strong team in the past couple of years,” Brooks said. “They have been ranked in the top 25 and have consistently performed well this year. This will be a great test for us as we prepare for conference coming up soon.”

Both the men and women are coming off a loss to Arizona State this past weekend.  Preston Jenkins won both the 100 and 200 back, Jordan Fletcher won the 50 free and Hayden Palmer won the 200 IM.

This will be the last meet for the swimming teams before the MPSF Conference Championships, which will take place Feb. 20-23 at the Belmont Pool in Long Beach, Calif. The diving teams have two meets remaining on their schedule.

Check the women’s schedule page for results of the two meets.
