No. 18 BYU Dominates On the Road

Image

MISSOULA -- 90 minutes of play, 26 shots and two goals in the second half gave the Cougars the 2-1 win over Montana, Saturday.

“The team battled hard today," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We came out strong and created several opportunities early in the game. Montana scored first on a well executed set piece, but our players responded with determination and even more effort. I thought the girls showed tremendous composure in a tough situation.”

After 17 minutes of play, freshman Nawal Kirts scored her first goal of the year for Montana to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. Kirts' goal would be Montana's first and only shot on goal for the entire game.

The Cougars went into the half with 13 shots but zero goals.

The second half was a different story. The Cougars, again, took 13 shots but this time they added two goals to the scoreboard to put them up 2-1.

Goals from freshman Carlee Payne in the 66th minute and sophomore Jennie Marshall in the 71st minute gave the Cougars their third road win this season and a 4-2-1 record.

The Cougars have come away with the win in every game that Payne has scored in, but one.

“Our offense is improving and we were on the attack for most of the game," Rockwood said. "We were able to move the ball effectively through our midfield and provide the forwards with chances to be dangerous. The defense was solid and only allowed one shot on the day.”

BYU's dominating offense was led by Payne's six shots followed by teammate Auna Janis with four of her own. The Cougars took 10 corner kicks while the Grizzlies took none.

“We continue to try and learn from each match, and this weekend provided us with valuable lessons that will make us stronger as we prepare for conference play," Rockwood said.

Up next for the Cougars is another two-game road trip to Illinois and then to Arizona.
