BYU Drops Heartbreaker in Vegas

Image

LAS -- With the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and a No. 1 seed in the upcoming MWC Tournament on the line, the BYU women's soccer team lost a tough 1-0 match at UNLV Friday.

The Cougars outshot the Rebels 16-10 in the game and put 10 shots on goal to the Rebels' five. The second half was all Cougars as they recorded 11 shots with seven on goal. Senior midfielder Carolyn Swenson recorded three of BYU's shots on goal to lead the Cougar offense.

"Our girls played hard, and they played well," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We controlled the ball most of the game. The team gave it everything they had, and all we can do is come back and score a goal next Wednesday. This is a really good team, and we have more games to play."

Despite the barrage of shots, BYU was not able to put one in the back of the net in regulation or 12 minutes of overtime. UNLV's Katie Carney scored in the 102nd minute to win the game and clinch a MWC regular-season title for the Rebels. Friday marked the first win UNLV has ever had against BYU.

The top two seeds in the Tournament will receive a first-round bye. The Tournament will be held in Provo Nov. 7-10, with games at 1 and 4 p.m. on both Wednesday and Thursday, and the championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

BYU to Play for MWC Championship

Image

PROVO -- The No. 19 BYU women's soccer team will play its last regular season match of the season at UNLV Friday with the Mountain West Conference regular season championship on the line.

The Cougars (14-2-2, 4-2-0) are ranked third in the nation in goals-against average (.377), third in shutout percentage (.667), and ninth in save percentage (.889). They are also sixth in won-loss-tied percentage (.833). UNLV is currently atop the Mountain West Conference standings and just one point ahead of BYU, but BYU has never lost to UNLV.

The MWC Tournament will be held in Provo Nov. 7-10. Teams participating in the Tournament include BYU, UNLV, Utah, San Diego State, TCU, and Wyoming. Seeding for the tournament will be decided by this week's games. A BYU win would clinch a first-round bye in the Tournament.

Live stats for Friday's game will be available on the schedule page at unlvrebels.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer.
