Larkin Scores Game-Winner Against Montana

Image

PROVO -- For the seventh time this season, Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin scored a game-winning goal and gave the Cougars (8-0-2) a 2-1 victory over Montana Saturday night at South Stadium in chilly conditions.

Larkin's goal was her eighth of the season, surpassing the previous seven she recorded last season. Larkin recorded three shots and also earned her first assist of the season.

"Tonight's weather definitely wasn't the best conditions," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We have to be able to adjust and play well. We expect to still be playing in November and the conditions then will be much like tonight."

BYU outshot Montana during the first half of play, 9-2. Freshman Becca Riddle got two goal shots off early, but yielded no results.

In the 40th minute Kassidy Christensen recorded her third score of the year and first of the game. A double assist from Larkin and Ashleigh Jameson set Christensen up for a header that sailed out of the reach of Montana's goalie.

"Luckily I was just there," said Christensen. "It was a fun goal to score."

Coming out of halftime, the Cougars immediately went to work. After only twenty seconds Swenson passed the ball in to Larkin, who found herself with a clear shot on the left side of the goal.

Goalkeeper Erika Woodbury had a relatively quiet evening, recording only two saves. In the 67th minute however, Montana's Sara Campbell scored, resulting in only the second goal allowed by Woodbury all season.

"I was a little disappointed by our performance," Rockwood said. "One or two points isn't much of a lead. We need to learn how to put teams away and do a better job organizationally. We need to make that third goal."

Team injuries could not stop the Cougars, who played without starters Katie Fellows and Karen Cook. Fellows suffered a concussion on Monday in the game against Washington and Cook was out with a high ankle sprain. Carolyn Swenson started the game despite nursing a broken rib.

BYU's next game will be against Utah State on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at South Stadium.
