BERKELEY, Calif. – BYU gymnastics scored a 194.150 to finish sixth in its last meet of the 2015 season at the NCAA Regionals at Haas Pavilion Saturday night.

“We didn’t have our best meet tonight, but we’re happy with the opportunity,” BYU gymnastics head coach Brad Cattermole said. “Our girls stepped up every time we were hit with another challenge and I’m proud of them.”

The Cougars began their first rotation on floor exercise and totaled a 48.375. Makenzie Johnson led with a team-high 9.750 with KayCee Gassaway following with a 9.700. Kyleigh Greenlief and Ashley Robinson each recorded a 9.650, while Jordan Schult finished with a 9.625.

On vault, Johnson landed a team-high 9.875 to help BYU record a 49.025. Sin To, Mikaela Jones and Gassaway finished with a 9.800 each, while Schult followed with a 9.750 in the second rotation.

After a bye in the third rotation, Brittni Wilde led the team with a 9.800 on bars. Johnson and Gassaway notched a 9.775 and 9.750, respectively, while Emily Vidmar recorded a 9.675.

In their final event, the Cougars scored a 48.150 on beam. Johnson and Vidmar recorded a team-high 9.800 each with Schult finishing with a 9.700.

Johnson finished the event with an all-around score of 39.200 to tie in fifth place out of 13 all-around competitors.

The meet marks the 24th time Coach Cattermole has led his team to an NCAA Regional meet in his 28 years as the coach.

BYU returns several contributors and looks to use its 2015 campaign to build for the future.

Cougars compete in NCAA regionals in California

Image

PROVO, Utah – BYU gymnastics will compete in the NCAA regional meet on Saturday, April 4, with hopes to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.

"We're excited for the opportunity to compete in regionals again," BYU gymnastics coach Brad Cattermole said. "We've had a few bumps in the road this season with injuries, but the team has worked hard to get to where we are right now. We've worked hard to qualify and we'll be competing against a lot of great teams."

BYU competes in regionals for the 24th time in the last 26 years and will be a participant with the Berkeley Regional. The group includes No. 3 Utah, No. 10 Georgia, No. 15 Boise State, No. 20 California and Utah State.

"Three of the five teams in our bracket we've competed against this season, so we know it will not be easy," Cattermole said. "Hopefully, we hit all our routines and give ourselves a chance to advance."

The top two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships held on April 17-19 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Last season in regionals, the Cougars finished in sixth place with a 194.650. This year, BYU scored a season-high 196.375 against Utah State in its last regular season meet. The team has posted top team scores of 49.175 on vault, 49.050 on bars, 49.025 on beam and 49.250 on floor.
