Last-Second Shot Forces Loss for Cougars

Image

SEATTLE -- The BYU women’s basketball team is now holding a 1-1 record after a last second three-pointer by Pac-10 foe Washington gave the Huskies a 67-66 win, Wednesday.

A late run in the game brought the Huskies within one of the Cougars but a 3-pointer from junior guard Haley Hall would put BYU back at a comfortable four-point lead with 1:18 left in the game. Hall finished the game with 14 points and four assists.

The Huskies leading scorer senior Sami Whitcomb found herself with the ball and four seconds left on the clock. She hit a 3-pointer at the last second to put Washington up by one and lead them to the win.

"We did a great job of hanging in there and playing well," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We made some mistakes but we'll bounce back. It's still early in the season."

BYU finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from the line. Washington shot 39.7 percent from the field. The Cougars took six more three-pointers than the Huskies, going 10-18 from behind the arc.

A six-point run from the Huskies put Washington in the lead early in the first half. A quick lay up from BYU’s Mindy Nielson ended their streak and ended the Huskies’ dominating lead as the Cougars went on an 18-4 run to give them the lead in the first half.

In the middle of the first half, within a five-minute span, the Cougars put up four 3-pointers in a row from Kim Parker, Keilani Moeaki, Nielson and Hall. A lay up from Nielson, who finished with 10 points, would end the 3-point streak and put the Cougars up 25-18. Moeaki finished with 11 and Parker with five.

Freshman Alexis Kafusi gave BYU a double-figure lead with four minutes to play in the first half after a 2-point jumper and a follow-up free throw on a foul.

The Cougars ended the first half with a 34-30 lead and would hold their lead until the last minute of the contest. The game saw five lead changes, all of them coming in the first half.

BYU next travels to Bozeman, Montana, to play at Montana State on Friday at 7 p.m.MT
