OGDEN, Utah — Despite rough weather at the Weber State Twilight Meet, the No. 23 BYU men’s track and field team ended the day with solid performances, especially in the field events.

“The weather was rough today, but I think we competed well,” head coach Mark Robison said. “We saw some good things today and we’re looking forward to the big meets next week.”

Dakoda John won the men’s high jump event with a mark of 6-10.75. In the pole vault, Tyler Brown took first place and submitted a personal-record mark of 16-06.00. Jameson Shirley finished second, clearing 16-00.00, and Kyle Brown took fourth place with a mark of 15-00.25.

The long jumpers faced a challenge, jumping into the wind, but sophomore Jonathan Ferguson still jumped a distance of 22-03.00, which was good for second place. Scott Matheson took fifth place overall with a mark of 21-01.50.

Dennis Christensen finished in second place in the shot put competition. His best throw of 54-00.50 came on his fourth attempt.

BYU had the top two finishers in the discus throw, with Winston Wilkinson and Jacob Foutz claiming first and second place, respectively. Winston had a mark of 163-00.00 while Foutz threw 160-04.00. Senior Clinton Prestwich took seventh place with a throw of 146-03.00. Foutz also threw the hammer on Wednesday, taking fourth place with a personal record throw of 165-03.00.

On the track, Benjamin Meyer took sixth place in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.54. Bejon Bryant took eighth with a time of 11.66 and Jason Hinds came in ninth place with a time of 12.06. Bryant also came in third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17.

In the 400-meter dash, Jacob Arslanian had the top time for the Cougars, taking fourth place overall with a time of 50.22. Sophomore Tyrell Yardley came in fifth place, just behind Arslanian, with a time of 50.47.

Justin Hedin and Brad Nye took third and fourth place overall, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Hedin was able to finish third even after a rough start. Hedin finished in 1:53.07 and Nye finished in 1:53.44.

In the 1,500-meter run, Ryan Jones finished in second place with a time of 3:51.72. Jared Rohatinsky and Jason Witt took third and fourth place, respectively, with times of 3:52.50 and 3:53.21.

The Cougars struggled in the 4x100-meter relay and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. BYU took third place in the 4x100, finishing in 42.13. In the steeplechase, Jacob Cosby finished second out of two runners with a time of 10:01.17.

Next weekend, BYU will send athletes to Atlanta next week for the Georgia Tech Invitational as well as to Princeton, N.J. for the IC4A Championships.

PROVO, Utah — The No. 23 BYU men’s track and field team heads to Ogden, Utah, Wednesday afternoon to compete at the Weber State Twilight Meet at Stewart Stadium.

The one-day meet will give several Cougars a last chance to qualify for year-end championship meets. It will also help BYU coaches decide who to take to the Georgia Tech Invitational and IC4A Championships, two of the biggest meets of the year.

“We’re sending guys to Weber who we want to get one more chance to prove themselves before the IC4A Championships and the regional meet,” head coach Mark Robison said. “We hope we’ll have some good weather and hopefully get some good performances.”

BYU had a good showing at its home meet last weekend, but slid a few spots in the national rankings from No. 17 to No. 23. The Cougars have several athletes who are currently qualified for the regional preliminaries and hope to qualify more at Weber State this week.
