Cougars Win Big In Second Exhibition Game

Image

PROVO -- Combo attack by Cougar guards Mike Hall and Mike Rose led the way in a BYU victory over the Calgary Dinos, 86-52, Friday night in the Marriott Center. The Cougars dominated in every aspect of the game to conclude its exhibition play at 2-0.

The Cougars found their groove early in the first half, showcased by a Terry Nashif dish-off the backboard to fellow teammate Hall for the dunk. BYU shot 50 percent better from beyond the arc this week than the Cougars last first half 0-for-8 shooting performance against BYU-Hawaii. Jared Jensen delivered the games first two points with a pair of free throws to take the lead and the Cougars never looked back. The undersized Dinos struggled from tip-off to stay close to the Cougars as BYU led 51-23 at the half.

Four Cougars scored in double figures with Rose coming off the bench to lead all Cougar scores with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Hall sparked the Cougars early against the Dinos, scoring all of his 13 points in the first half. Jensen led the Cougars' post-play with 10 points and Nashif also finished with 10 points and a game-high nine assists.

BYU's dominance was displayed as the Cougars topped the Dinos in field goal percentage, rebounding, assists, blocks and steals. The Cougars finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from the three point arc.

All but one Cougar player got a piece of the action in tonight's exhibition win. Point Guard Austin Ainge sat out due to an ankle injury in last week's exhibition game. BYU head coach Steve Cleveland commented on his team's all-around effort.

"If exhibition games are about giving everyone an opportunity to play, then this was a successful exhibition game for our team," said Cleveland.

Calgary was led by center Robert Wright who carried the Dinos with a game-high 15 points and team-high nine rebounds and three assists.

The Cougars' will match up in their regular-season opener on Nov. 22nd against No. 3 North Carolina in Hawaii while BYU's home-opener is set for Nov. 27th at 7 p.m. against the California Bears.

Cougars Host Calgary Friday

Image

PROVO -- BYU plays its final exhibition game Friday when the Cougars host the University of Calgary at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center.

The game is part of the season ticket packet and available to all BYU All-Sport Card holders. Single-game tickets can be purchased for $5, $10, or $15 at the Marriott Center Ticket Office by calling 422-BYU1 or 800-322-BYU1 or online at BYUtickets.com.

The Calgary Dinos return three starters from last year's 25-11 club that finished as one of Canada's top four teams, advancing to the semifinals of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championship before a tough 69-67 loss to eventual 2004 CIS National Champion Carleton Ravens.

Calgary will provide BYU with its final exhibition test prior to the Cougars' regular-season opener against No. 3 North Carolina on Nov. 22 in the first round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational.

In BYU's first exhibition last Friday, senior swingman Mike Hall scored 16 points to lead BYU to an 85-70 victory over BYU-Hawaii. Guard Austin Ainge led the team in rebounds with nine while adding eight points and five assists. In all, 13 of 15 players on the active roster saw action, with 12 contributing to the Cougar scoring column.
