Cougars Gain Third Conference Victory

PROVO, Utah -- The freshmen showed up strong for the BYU women’s tennis team, who defeated Colorado State 6-1 Friday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts.

“We did really well at staying focused on all the courts,” BYU head coach Lauren Jones Spencer said. “All the girls have been playing really well. Now we’re getting ready to play Wyoming. They’re a a pretty tough opponent. They always play well to the end.”

In doubles play, Elle Carney and freshman Kelsie Craig of Orem, Utah quickly defeated Melissa Holzinger and Veronkia Wojakowska 8-2. Elizaveta Ezhova and freshman Desiree Tran took the doubles point for BYU (8-8, 3-1), winning against Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz. Capping off the doubles sweep, freshman Callie Craig of Orem, Utah and Megan Price claimed victory over Rams Tori Arneson, a native of Ogden, Utah, and Caitlin Fluegge 8-5.

The freshmen kept it rolling in singles, with Tran scoring BYU’s first point on a 6-0, 6-2 win against Wojakowska. Callie Craig followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Arneson at the No. 2 position.

Senior Elle Carney rounded up the win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on Court 3 against Mulhern. Price followed with BYU’s fifth point after a three-set match against Caitlin Fluegge at the No. 1 position (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). Ezhova kept her singles winning streak going with a win against Schultz (6-3, 6-0).

Holzinger recorded the only point for CSU (7-8, 0-3) with a win against Kelsie Craig 6-1, 4-6, (10-7).

The Cougar’s last matchup of the weekend will begin at noon Saturday against No. 72 Wyoming.
