Utah Squeaks Past Cougars
PROVO -- With the Mountain West Conference Championship on the line, the No. 16 BYU women's soccer team (12-5-2, 4-1-0) fell in overtime 1-0 to in-state rival No. 14 Utah (15-2-0, 6-0-0).
After defeating the Utes 12-consecutive times, the Cougars have now dropped their last two meetings to Utah.
"This is a good team we played tonight," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We had opportunities, but still need someone to step up for this team and hit those goals that we need."
The Utes and Cougars played an evenly matched game with BYU out shooting the Utes 5-4 in the first period, and then again 2-3 in the second, but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.
When the clock in regulation expired the teams were deadlocked at 0-0, sending the Cougars into their fifth overtime game of the season.
In overtime Utah's Amanda Feigt booted the game-winning goal into the net from 18 yards out.
Saturday's game also marked the final home game for seven Cougars as it was senior night at South Stadium where seniors Aleisha Rose, Lydia Ojuka, Jennifer Fielding, Britney Holman, Aydree Soffe and Farrah Olmstead saying good bye to the Cougar crowd.
The Cougars will be heading to Salt Lake City for the MWC Tournament at the University of Utah beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 3, as BYU receives the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
