BYU Dominates Stanford 5-0 in NCAA Tourney Play
PROVO -- The 8th-ranked BYU women's soccer team shut out 16th-ranked Stanford, 5-0, in Saturday night second round NCAA tournament action before a crowd of 1,239 in winter conditions. Game -time temperature was 29 degrees.
Cougar goalkeeper Jennifer Waldron, who averaged 1.01 saves per game on the season, recorded five in the contest. The first half was dominated by strong defensive performances on both side of the field as The Cardinal limited the Cougars to five corner kicks and 13 shots in the period. Stanford's Marci Ward was the only threat to BYU in the first period with two shots on goal for The Cardinal.
"We defended well in the first half," said Stanford coach Andy Nelson. "Give credit to BYU- they got ahead and then they finished us off."
BYU turned it up a notch in the second half as five different Cougars scored. Sophomore defender Farrah Hofheins scored the first goal of the night at the 40 minute mark, notching her first of the season. Senior midfielder Sara Reading added a second goal on a Michelle Peterson/ Kim Lowe assist. Midfielders Kelly Hunsberger, Jennie Christianson and Donna Werts came off the bench to add a goal each in a period of six minutes to close out the remaining ten minutes of play. It was Hunsberger and Wert's first goals of the season.
"The first goal gave us the confidence we needed and settled us down," said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We had a full team effort tonight and I'm proud of the way the girls prepared and played."
"We moved the ball and controlled the middle with a great defensive line led by Aleisha Cramer and Natalyn Lewis," said Rockwood.
The win in second-round NCAA tournament play moves the Cougars to 19-3-1, 6-0-0 on the season while Stanford finishes the year at 14-6-1, 6-3-0. BYU advances to the third round of championship and will play Santa Clara. The NCAA will announce location and time on Sunday night.
