Utah State Scores Season High In Win Over BYU
LOGAN, Utah (March, 9, 2001)- In a meet where Utah State tied or broke 15 individual and team highs, the BYU gymnastics team fell to the Aggies 196.025 to 195.500 on Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Cougars tied a school record on the floor excercise with a 49.525, a score they recorded once before this season against Missouri. The record score included a 9.95 by Kim Little. Utah State's score was the second highest in school history, as they set season highs on every event except the beam.
"This was a 197 waiting to happen and we didn't reach down and pick it up," said BYU coach Brad Cattermole. "Beam was a twilight zone tonight. We've just got to get our brains in the game."
BYU was without the full strength of their top gymnast, Kelly Parkinson, who is nursing a sore back. The Cougars scored low on every event escept for the record performance on the floor.
"I thought we came back and did a great job," said Utah State coach Ray Corn. "It's what we've been waiting for all year long. For some reason tonight we were able to put it all together."
In Utah State's last home meet of the season, Nicole Kilpatrick won the all-around competition with a career-high score of 39.325. For the Cougars, Little was the only gymnast in the all-around and she scored a 38.700.
BYU is back in action on Saturday night when Southern Utah and Stanford come to the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
