Cougars in seventh after round one in Hawai'i
LAHAINA, Hawai'i — BYU sits in seventh place after a 3-over-par opening round in the 2023 Anuenue Spring Break Classic at the Ka’anapali Golf Course on Monday.
Allysha Mae Mateo, Lila Galeai and Berlin Long each posted a 1-under 71 in the opening round to hold a share of 14th going into the second 18 holes on Tuesday.
Playing back in her home state, Mateo continued her strong play that includes five-straight top-11 finishes, dating back to her win at the Miami Hurricane Invitational in November. The senior carded three birdies and two bogeys en route to her first-round 71.
Galeai recorded six birdies on the opening day while Long, who is competing as an individual, poured in four birdies in her last seven holes to vault into the top-15.
No. 41 Denver (275) leads the 54-hole championship after shooting 13-under-par on day one to hold a nine-shot lead over No. 25 Pepperdine (284), who sits at 4-under. No. 30 UCLA (286) is third alone at 2-under with Santa Clara (287), one-shot back after 18 holes. Cal Poly (288) rounds out the top-5 after an even-par opening day, while the Cougars sit in seventh at 3-over-par.
Annick Haczkiewicz shot 74 and sits in a tie for 40th at 2-over-par after day one. Kerstin Ngakuru is one shot back of her teammate at 3-over after an opening 75. Alexa Udom rounded out the day one scoring for BYU with a round of 7-over-par.
The Cougars will return to the course tomorrow at 8 a.m. HST where they will tee it up with San Francisco and Tulane in round two. Live scoring for the team and individual championships are available at golfstat.com.
