BYU gets underway at Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Freshman golfer Maria Bernal Clavijo, playing as an individual, shot a one-under 71 in the first round of the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational to tie for sixth place on Thursday.
Rose Huang shot two-over to lead the team effort.
The Cougars are tied for ninth place with UMKC and Colorado State with a combined 308 (+20) at the tournament south of the border. Arizona leads at the event at two-under par with a team score of 286 (-2). Event host, Iowa, is two strokes ahead of BYU with a 306 (+18).
Huang opened the tournament with an even par through the first seven holes before a bogey on eight to put her at one-over at the turn. She picked up six more pars and a birdie on the back-nine and finished tied for 16th overall with a 74 on the day.
Naomi Soifua shot a five-over 77, highlighted by an eagle on hole 14 en route to a three-under back-nine. Soifua is currently tied for 30th.
Allysha Mae Mateo was right behind her with a 78 (+6) and is tied for 39th through one round. Annick Haczkiewicz put up a 79 (+7), one stroke off her teammate and is tied for 46th.
Tied for 56th, Anna Kennedy posted an 82 to round out BYU’s five.
The Cougars will compete again tomorrow with another round at the El Tigre Country Club, followed by a final round on Saturday. Live stats are available on Golfstat.com
