PROVO -- The BYU women’s basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Colorado State, 61-43, at the Marriott Center Saturday afternoon.

The game marks the beginning of Mountain West Conference play for the Cougars and increases BYU’s win-streak to nine games. The Cougars are now 11-2, 1-0.

“It was a good win for us, and CSU did a good job,” BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. “We had spurts where we played well and had spurts where we didn’t.”

Senior Shawnee Slade led the Cougars with 16 points, while Keilani Moeaki added 10 points to the effort. The Cougar defense helped boost the team, forcing 23 turnovers and out-rebounding the Rams, when the offense failed to produce at times.

“This team knows its strength is defense,” Judkins said. “Defense wins games and they believe that.”

Despite the 18-point win, BYU struggled to put up points early as missed shots and turnovers dominated the first period. After 1:30 of scoreless play, Jazmine Foreman scored the Cougars’ first basket and assisted Kelani Moeaki on a fast break to put the Cougars up 4-0. The four-point lead proved to be the biggest the Cougars would take in during the period.

The Cougar offense shot only 31 percent form the field. Yet, they maintained a lead going into the second period, 23-20.

The Rams shot 26 percent from the field, and their leading scorer Kandy Beemer was held to no points in the first half alone.

In the beginning of the second period the game remained even with CSU answering BYU’s every move, until a 10-3 point run put the Cougars up 39-31. Coriann Wood and Sarah Red-Hostetter shot back-to-back threes to add to BYU’s momentum.

CSU battled back but the deficit was too much for the Rams to overcome. Addition back-to-back threes and two made free throws put BYU up 46-33 as they continued to distance the space between themselves and the Rams.

A Ram scoring drought during the final 3:30 minutes of the game, combined with continued Cougar scoring efforts cemented 61-43 win.

BYU continues conference play when they visit TCU on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.CT. That game will air live on the Mtn., and can also be heard live via the internet at www.byuradio.org/streaming
