Women Suffer One-Point Loss To Lobos in MWC Road Action
Albuquerque, NM (Feb. 21, 2004) In the second league road game of the week, the Cougar women fall to 4-7 in conference play after a very close hard fought one-point 59-60 loss against second place New Mexico, Saturday.
Both teams played a close second half with neither team leading by more than three points for the entire period. Mandi Moore came up with the winning free throw for the Lobos getting the first of two foul shots in the closing seconds of the game. The Cougars had a chance to win the game on their next possession but were unable to convert on the game's final play.
"We played one of our best games of the year," said assistant coach Alli Bills. "We showed a lot of heart and made some big shots."
Julie Sullivan picked up her fourth straight double digit scoring game with a team high 15 points with teammate Kristen Kozlowski coming off the bench for her season and career high 13 points. Senior center Ashleigh Chamberlain also had her fourth consecutive double figure game with 10 points.
BYU finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field, 69 percent (9-13) from the free throw line, and outrebounded the Lobos 34 to 28. The one-point loss was the eighth game where the team has lost by seven or less points. The team suffered another blow when sophomore forward Jennie Overdiek went down with a sprained her ankle in the first half of the game.
Lindsay Arndt led all scores with a game high 16 points and eight boards. Moore had 11 points, six assists and four rebounds for New Mexico.
The Lobos got off to an 8-0 lead in the early minutes of the first half, up 13 points with just under 11 minutes of action in the period.
BYU went on a 9-0 run late in the first half and tied the score at 25-25 with 4:30 left after Danielle Cheesman made two shots at the foul line. At the break, the visiting Cougar team had a 34-31 advantage.
The Cougars, (14-11, 4-7) continue MWC action on the road next week, playing at instate rival Utah on Sat., Feb. 28. The game at the Huntsman Center tips off at 3 p.m.
