Four Score in Double Figures in Season Opener Win

Ogden, Utah (Nov. 21,2003) Julie Sullivan came off the bench to score a team high 18 points as BYU opened the women's basketball season with a 68-51 victory over Weber State, Friday.

Danielle Cheesman, Ambrosia Anderson and Ashleigh Chamberlain also picked up double figure scoring in the Cougar win with 14, 12 and 10 points respectively.

The visiting BYU team got off to a quick, going up by 11 with over seven minutes to play in the first half. Weber State battled back and cut the lead to five, giving the Cougars a 29-24 advantage.

In the second half, tough defense and great team play kept the visiting team in a comfortable lead. But, the Wildcats would not go away staying in the contest in the early minutes of the second half before the Cougars pulled away with a 14-point lead with over a minute remaining.

"We played well today especially in the second half," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "This was a good team effort, everybody did a great job and we used our size to our advantage."

For the Wildcats, Julie Gjertsen led all scores with a game high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Weber State shot 33 percent from the field and 65 from the free-throw line.

The Cougars shot 46 percent from the field while only committing 10 turnovers in the game.

With a 1-0 record, BYU travels to Anchorage to participate in the 2003 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 24 and 25. They play Clemson at 10 p.m., Mountain Time, next Tuesday.
