Win Streak Ends at 11 to Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by New Mexico did in the BYU softball team as the Cougars lost 3-2 to the Lobos on Saturday.

The loss ended an 11-game win streak by BYU and left them with a 1.5-game lead over Utah in the Mountain West Conference standings at 9-2 while the Utes are at 7-3.

Down by one run after four innings, freshman Carly Duckworth hit a home run in the fifth for BYU's first run of the game, tying the score at 1-1. The round-tripper was her seventh on the year.

The scoreboard continued to remain quiet until the seventh and final inning when BYU finally strung together some hits. With two on and one out in the inning, junior Stacie Graham singled to right field to score Delaney Willard from third and give BYU its first lead of the game.

In the following at bat, junior Jessica Dugas reached on a bunt to load the bases. Kristin Delahoussaye and Tiffany Messerschmidt both managed to put the ball in play, but both times the Lobo fielders managed to get the calls at home, getting out of the inning down just one run.

The Cougars managed to get two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but New Mexico's Danielle Castro put a pitch over the fence with a runner on base to give the Lobos a walk-off win.

Dugas led all players, hitting 3-for-3. Caschjen Atagi added two hits while Paige Affleck totaled eight strikeouts.

After playing their final non-conference game at Southern Utah on May 10, BYU will look to win its third-straight MWC championship when the Cougars host Utah in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 14, at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. If BYU wins at least one of the two Deseret First Duel games, it will claim the championship.
