Big Day for the Cougars
PALO ALTO -- It was a big day for the BYU softball team as they defeated Hawai`i 5-2 and fell short to No. 12 Stanford in a close 7-5 battle. The Cougars are now posting a 16-9 overall record.
"It was a good weekend for us," BYU coach Mindy Hanson said. "We feel confident that we're in the right spot to start conference."
After losing to Hawaii 7-3 in the season opening game, BYU came out strong to take a three-run lead after the top of the second inning.
Contributing to the four hits in the second were Paige Paramore, Krystle Chamberlain, Jennifer Whiteley and Jodi Norton.
BYU added another run in the top of the third inning as Ianeta Le`i kept the offense going with an extra-base double to right field. Teammate Ashlyn Russell brought Le`i home off of her single through the right side, giving BYU a 4-0 cushion.
Hawai`i fought back to gather its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cougars would add another run in the top of the fifth to run away with the 5-2 win. The run came off another single from Russell that scored Le`i.
After earning Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors this week, Cougar pitcher Niki Andersen continued with another outstanding performance. She allowed no earned runs pitching a complete seven-inning game and recorded eight strikeouts. With the win, she leads the pitching staff in wins with a 9-3 record.
With the win, BYU was able to get revenge against the tough Hawai`i team and even up the all-time series to 1-1.
In game two, BYU came out strong again against No. 12 Stanford to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off a two-run home run from Russell, her fifth of the year.
Stanford rallied back with a huge five-run inning in the top of the third to gain momentum. The Cardinal led off with two singles and scored their first run off an error. Stanford followed with back-to-back doubles to put another three runs on the board. Brooke Boyce, who started at pitcher, was relieved by Andersen for the remainder of the inning. With one on base, the Cardinal scored their fifth run of the inning (unearned) and Andersen struck out the next batter to get the third out.
The Cardinal put two more runs on the board, one in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to set the score at 7-2.
The Cougars didn't give up as they recorded three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off two home runs from Debbie Dodds (two-run homer) and Norton.
Both teams played good defense the remaining two innings to allow no runs, giving Stanford the close 7-5 win over BYU.
Andersen and Boyce combined for seven innings pitching 5.0 and 2.0 innings, respectively. Boyce (5-5) received the loss on the mound.
Overall in the Stanford Classic, the Cougars posted a 2-2 record, hit five doubles and six home runs. Norton led BYU offensively batting 6-13 (.462), nailing three home runs and bringing in seven RBI. Defensively, she posted 10 assists and two putouts.
Senior Lindsey Gerhauser also did an excellent job at second base in both games today as she filled in for an injured Kate Walker.
"Lindsey stepped up and did a great job," Hanson said. "We have a very tough bench who comes through for us."
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Utah Valley State College starting at 2 p.m. in Orem.
BYU will also open up conference play hosting this week against the University of Nevada Las Vegas on Thursday starting at 3 p.m., and San Diego State on Friday starting at 4 p.m. (KBYU-TV). These games will be the first BYU home games of the season.
