Cougars Lose Close Games To Ranked Teams

LAS VEGAS -- The BYU women's softball team lost two close games Friday against No. 18 Oregon State, 3-1 and No. 5 Cal-Berkeley, 5-2 at the Desert Breeze Classic. The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3, 0-0 on the season.

In their first game in nearly two full weeks, the Cougars lost a close game to No. 18 Oregon State (9-1). BYU handed the Beavers their only loss of the season at the Thunderbird Classic on Feb. 2. Liz VanderLindon hit an inside-the-park home run for the Cougars only score. Cynthia Fallowfield (2-1) pitched well in her first loss of the season.

Playing immediately after Oregon State, the Cougars lost to No. 5 Cal 5-2. All-American Oli Keohohou hit her third home run of the season, a two-run blast, in only the sixth game of the year. Last season she hit 21 home runs, good for fourth place in the nation. Freshman Niki Andersen (0-2) picked up the loss for the Cougars in only her second collegiate start.

The Cougars will close out their play in the UNLV Classic tomorrow with No. 2 UCLA at 10 a.m. and No. 12 Nebraska at 3 p.m.
