BYU drops late inning thriller to No. 3 Oklahoma 3-1

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. – Despite late-inning scoring, the BYU softball team dropped a close one to No. 3 Oklahoma 3-1 on the final day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Saturday night.

Game Highlights:

  • Autumn Moffat held the Sooners scoreless for five innings and ultimately only gave up three runs with one walk in 6.0 innings pitched
  • Freshman Kaylee Erickson tallied her first career hit against Oklahoma in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Martha Epenesa, Kaylee Erickson and Emilee Erickson gave BYU a surge in the top of the seventh inning as Epenesa scored for a 3-1 finish.

  • Autumn Moffat: L (1-1), 6.0 IP, 6H, 2ER, 1BB, 1K
  • Both Autumn Moffat and Huntyr Ava were named All-Tournament following the game

BYU vs. No. 3 Oklahoma Box Score

With the game scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Oklahoma (4-0) opted to put in their All-American pitcher to face the BYU (2-2) lineup. Rylee Jensen-McFarland gave the first pitch she saw a ride but flew out to deep center field. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sooners broke the game open putting up three runs to make the score 3-0.

In the top of the seventh, Martha Epenesa drew a walk to get on base with one out. Emilee Erickson reached base on a fielder’s choice and an error on Oklahoma’s second baseman allowed Epenesa to reach second base. Kaylee Erickson followed, also reaching on a fielder’s choice with Emilee Erickson out at second but scoring Epensea to make the score 3-1. However, Bevell grounded out to end the game at 3-1.

The Cougars next travel to San Diego to compete in the Campbell Cartier Tournament with their first game against San Diego State on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. PT.
