Cougars fall short at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – BYU held its own against Texas A&M, but ultimately fell short, losing 3-2 on Friday night at Davis Diamond.

"We played a solid game in a big time environment," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said.  "Arissa Paulson pitched a great game but we just fell a little short."

  • Rylee Jensen and Libby Sugg scored BYU’s two runs with Sugg sending a ball over the fence for her fourth homer of the season
  • BYU outhit the Aggies 6 to 3 but Texas A&M capitalized on all three hits scoring three runs.
  • Arissa Paulson pitched the whole game for the Cougars, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts

BYU vs. Texas A&M Game 1 Box

BYU (13-17, 0-0) took the lead early, putting up a run in the first inning. Rylee Jensen singled up the middle followed by Brooke Vander Heide who laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Jensen to second. Taylei Williams singled up the middle as Jensen made it home to give the 1-0 advantage to the Cougars.

Texas A&M (21-13, 0-0) went down in order in the bottom of the first frame but the Aggies scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second.  A homer from the leadoff hitter tied up the game at 1-1. A sacrifice fly and single scored two more runs for the Aggies and they took the lead after the second 3-1.

Sugg’s homer in the top of the fourth brought the Cougars within one but BYU was unable to score again. Autumn Moffat singled in the top of the seventh to get the Cougars on base but a groundout ended the game 3-2.
