Almond and Clayton earn POW honors
PORTLAND—BYU's Tori Almond was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference Pitcher of the Week for her play in the San Diego Classic, while Cougar shortstop JC Clayton was named PCSC Player of the Week for the second-straight week.
Almond earned both wins in the San Diego Classic as the team defeated Boise State 8-1 and New Mexico 6-1, bringing her record to 4-3 on the season. The honor was her first of the season. In her three appearances over the weekend, she garnered a 1.52 ERA and allowed just two earned runs on five hits. She held opponents to a .152 batting average while also striking out 10.
Clayton earns her second-straight Player of the Week honor after extending her season hitting-streak to 19 games with a hit in all five games of the San Diego Classic. Her streak ties for the second-highest streak in PCSC history and third-highest in BYU history. She is only two games away from tying both records.
In the San Diego Classic, Clayton hit .500 (9 for 18) alongside three runs scored, three RBI and one triple. Defensively, she contributed 11 putouts and 10 assists and she currently leads the team with 41 assists. She also leads the conference and BYU with 32 hits and 13 runs scored on the season.
Another top performance for Pitcher of the Week includes San Diego’s Jenny Lahitte who had a 1.78 ERA over the weekend. Loyola Marymount’s Meghan Harmon and San Diego’s Dana Prelsnik were other top performers for Player of the Week, hitting .438 and .389, respectively.
BYU travels to Florida to play Maine in a double header on Thursday starting at 1 p.m. EST and will round out the weekend with two games on Saturday against LIU Brooklyn at 11:45 EST and Providence College at 2:30 EST.
